In competition ang Serbis ni Brillante Dante Mendoza sa katatapos lang na 61st Cannes International Film Festival. Last year, nakasama si Dante sa Director’s Fortnight ng Cannes for his film Foster Child. Cannes has this strict requirement na hindi puwedeng mag-compete ang isang direktor hangga’t hindi pa ito nakakapag-exhibition.

Although Serbis did not receive glowing reviews from the critics, may isang pinag-usapan na eksena sa pelikula ayon na rin sa mga nakapanood na Pinoy na nandoon. Ito ay ang frontal nudity ni Coco sa isang eksena.

Outright, we asked Coco kung tunay nga siyang nag frontal for the movie. Pero ang manager niyang si Noel ang sumagot on his behalf.

“Kapatid, ibigay mo na sa akin ito. Ako na lang ang sasagot, hindi ito maipalalabas sa Pilipinas,” paikot na sagot sa amin ni Noel.

So we asked again if there is such a scene. Mas nakakaintriga ang dagdag na paliwanag ni Noel.

“There was a breach of trust,” sabi niya.

Hindi sumasagot si Coco sa sunud-sunod na tanong namin, letting his manager do the talking for him. His facial reaction reveals though that he is not happy with what happened.

Sa tanong kung saan part ba ng Serbis nag-frontal si Coco, hindi ito masagot exactly ng aktor dahil it turned out, hindi niya pinanood ang pelikula noong nandoon siya. He was at the gala performance, although hindi siya pumasok sa sinehan.

We returned to the “breach of trust” thing, pero hindi na ito na-explain fully nina Coco at Noel.

“Wala ito sa usapan. Napilitan lang siya to do the scene dahil nanay-nanayan niya si Dante,” sabi ni Noel. “Pero nangako naman si Dante na hindi ito ipalalabas sa Pilipinas.”

We asked Noel to be specific—ang frontal ba o ang pelikula? Ang pagkakaalam namin, nagpapatulong na nga ang production ng initial press release for Serbis.

For sure daw na hindi maipalalabas sa Pilipinas ang frontal nudity ni Coco, sabi ni Noel, dahil part na ito ng usapan nila after all has been said and done. Hindi naman siya sigurado sa movie dahil very sensitive ang topic nito, about a family whose business is giving “service” to an old theater.

Both the careers of Dante as a director and Coco as an independent actor were launched successfully via the independent movie Masahista (The Masseur).
